2015 Wild & Scenic Film Festival

On Nov. 3, join the University of Utah’s Environment & Sustainability Studies Program for a fun evening while supporting a great cause for student scholarships. The 2016 Wild & Scenic Film Festival will be held at the Fort Douglas Post Theater from 7–10:00 pm. This event is the program’s main fundraiser for scholarships, which give students the opportunity to focus on studies by alleviating financial stress.

Author poses by the food table. The film festival and silent auction includes killer local items to bid on and savory treats from RubySnap Cookies, coffee, and herbal tea. The event is all about inspiring action, promoting the local community, and supporting Environmental and Sustainability Studies students. Jai Bashir is one of the students who received a scholarship from the program in the past.

Bashir explains, “The tuition waiver gave me the opportunity to put more diligent time and active passion into my writing and advocacy efforts, because I didn’t have to work three jobs to pay for tuition and living expenses. I was able accomplish things such as organizing a citywide protest (the local version of the People’s Climate March) and receiving an award from the Academy of American Poets.”

This worthwhile event is being organized by the Sustainability Leadership Committee: a group of nine select students who serve as ambassadors for the Environmental Studies Program.

As a member of the committee, I have been part of the planning process and can promise you that this year’s festival has a noteworthy line-up of films. After hours of watching environmental films with bloodshot eyes, we chose the perfect mix of films on topics ranging from solar energy, water, sense of place, creative research, and outdoor adventure. Between the alluring cinematography and stunning storytelling to inform, I bet you will leave the event feeling awed, inspired, and motivated.

Students try to decide which raffle items to bid on.Besides the captivating films, we have an impressive supply of silent auction items on which to bid. We have scored awesome raffle items from local sponsors: Petzl, Line Skis, Saga, Buds, Alta, Momentum Climbing Gym, The Mine Boldering Gym, Mad River Boat Trips, Natural History Museum, Red Butte Gardens, Tracy Aviary, We Are Yoga, Salt Lake City Bikram Yoga, Foliage, Cactus & Tropicals, Relics Framemakers, Jeremiah Watt Photography, City Cakes Café & Bakery, Tamarisk Restaurant, and more! This year we will have equally epic (if not better) raffle items up for grabs! The Sustainability Leadership Committee asked local business for silent auction donations. We are thankful for our sponsors for helping make this event successful.

A key feature to environmentalism and to living sustainably is localism. When planning the event, the Leadership Committee had the community in mind and kept donation items and food for the event as local as possible. This event supports the Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program, and as students, we want to also support the Salt Lake City community.

What better way to engage in the community than supporting dedicated students, enjoying epic films, winning awesome items, and enjoying local sweets? Hurry and buy your tickets before they sell out. Don’t forget to invite your friends on Facebook!
