Celebrating Trailblazers of Sustainability

It the time of year again, where we get to reward our campus trailblazers of sustainability. Join us on March 3 at 2:00 pm on the 6th floor of the law building where Kyle Powys Whyte will give the keynote lecture, Exploring Justice and Resilience through Community Engaged Research. Dr. Whyte studies the ethical aspects of cooperation between Indigenous peoples and the scientific community.

After the keynote, we will be joined by a panel of experts—Rosey Hunter from the College of Social Work, Jose Galarza from the School of Architecture, and Brian Codding from the Anthropology Department. This panel of local community engaged researchers will bring valuable, local insights to the discussion.

In addition to the lecture presentation, Alta Ski Area and the University of Utah will partner to present six members of the campus community with the Alta Sustainability Leadership Awards. These awards recognize students, faculty, and staff who have demonstrated excellence in these four areas:

  1. Campus as a Living Lab Award
  2. Sustainability Community Partnership Award
  3. Sustainability Integration Award
  4. Sustainability Research Award.

The event is a great opportunity to support sustainability efforts on campus and the individuals who are responsible for innovative work happening here at the University of Utah. Adrienne Cachelin, Director of Sustainability Education on campus adds, “The Alta Sustainability Leadership Awards Ceremony will be a fun and fascinating way to see how all disciplines can engage with sustainability, from mechanical engineering professors, who seamlessly integrate education into their coursework, to atmospheric science students, who have figured out how to monitor air quality continuously across the Valley. These awards show how we can all engage in sustainability. Kyle’s talk is the perfect complement to these awards, as he’ll help us see that sustainability is justice.”

Mark your calendars and come celebrate with us on March 3. The Alta Sustainability Leadership Awards Ceremony is an event you definitely don’t want to miss! Check out photos from last year’s Alta Sustainability Leadership Award ceremony below.
