A Desert in Bloom

By Ayrel Clark-Proffitt, Sustainability Resource Center

The University of Utah Rio Mesa Center, located near Moab along the Dolores River, provides a space for University students and faculty to conduct research with an emphasis on ecology and the environment. In addition to its educational benefits, the setting of the center puts southern Utah’s beauty on full display—especially in the spring when the desert’s wildflowers are dotting the red rock landscape with vibrant oranges, yellows, pinks, and whites. Flowers from penstemon to larkspur to cactus flowers of many colors are currently blooming in the region.
